April Dance News

Costume Bag Note
Please do not let your daughter wear them around the house or lose any thing. Make sure it is hung neatly on a hanger; you may fluff it in the dryer for 2 minutes with a wet, clean wash rag or hang in the steamy bathroom to get the wrinkles out. Too hot of Dryer heat will melt sequins, so be careful. If there is netting please make sure each layer of net is separated and pulled carefully apart. These costumes have been stored in storage containers tightly since I received them in May last year. We tried them on the last 4 weeks, and they need a little care from you. Check to see if you need to attach straps or clear elastic straps to the back of the costume (over the shoulder) and hand sew to fit your daughter, also see if the front needs to be reinforced. All straps need to be attached. Also make sure any other items are fitted to your daughter. I do the best I can in ordering sizes for your classes last summer. Some costumes may need to be fitted. I can not fix 190 costumes so it will be up to you to fit them to your daughter. One class tore 2 of the straps off last week, this would not have been good during the recital, please check them and reinforce the front and back straps. Bring your costume bag, everything labeled, with your child’s name on, including their ballet slippers. With 93 girls all in one area things can easily be mixed up. Double check your bag for items before and after the Dress Rehearsal and before and after the Recital.
Please have your daughter’s come to the Dress Rehearsal and Recital dressed in their first costume (it is listed on the top of your colored bag note.) Also wearing her new white tights, and bring the labeled ballet slippers. Make sure they have gone to the bathroom before they come. We may not have enough Recital helpers to take them to the bathroom and get them back for their dance on time during the Recital. We cannot wait for them. (For pictures or the Recital) Also make sure they are well rested and have had a good meal and are not rushed, or stressed out when they come. (It makes for a grumpy unhappy dancer). There will not be any food allowed at Canyon View Jr. High...

No jewelry will be allowed on stage so leave it home.

Modesty- I try very hard to purchase modest costumes. Most Costumes do not have sleeves just like swimsuits don’t have sleeves. (See the New Era Article April 2007) I have explained costumes are like swimsuits to the girls. The Beauty of ballet is to see the lines in their arms. When the bodice and straps are sewn high enough that they feel comfortable dancing they will. I do not want to see any low cut bodices or bare bellies. Please pin the top and bottoms together if needed for the Recital. If you or your daughter wants to wear a skin colored leotard or Skin Colored Bra under her costume that will also be ok. If they feel comfortable they will dance better. I will be ordering light tan leotards-$15.00 they will be great for changing from one costume to another and being covered up. This is optional.

Dress Rehearsal–Saturday May 9th 2009. 9:00am-Noon Canyon View Jr. High 950 North 700 East Orem Utah this is 1 block east of my house- Please do not be late. We will start on time and will not wait for late comers. There will be 2 photographers, one for groups and one for individuals. Please be lined up at the stage at least 10 minutes before your time to dance on stage, We can not wait for you if you are taking individual pictures, do it after they dance when there is more time.. See approximate times for pictures on the photo sheet. Please remember it is most important to be ready to dance on stage and stay with your class. After you have danced the whole group can go get group pictures and then individual pictures. Then change into their 2nd costume and repeat- dancing on stage and taking the group and individual pictures.

May Tuition $38.00 will be due by May 1st or at your first class. All tuition and the Recital Fee will need to be paid by May 7th to my house to dance this year in the Recital. We will meet 4 times (8 hrs), Dance classes, the Recital Video party class, Dress Rehearsal/pictures and the Recital. Classes will end after the Video party and start again September 1st. I will mail you forms this summer if you sign up for Fall Dance. Sign ups are in the studio -if you want to stay with the same class please sign up soon.

Dress Rehearsal- A Mother or older sister (No Dad’s Please) will be expected to stay the whole time with their daughter and help them get to their pictures and dressed into their second costume. We need you there to keep this running smoothly. There will be no helpers at the dress rehearsal just at the Recital that afternoon.

There will be no saving of seats. Any save signs put on the chairs during the Dress Rehearsal will be removed so everyone can have a fair chance for seats at 3:30pm. Recital– Saturday May 9th 4:30-6:00 pm (Note the earlier time this year)-950 North. 655 East Canyon View Jr. High, this is the school one block east of my house. At 3:45pm we will run through the Finale this will be their first time to do this, and also set the girls up in their dancing orders. Also this will give the Class Mothers time to go over the costume changes with the Young Women helpers and then all Class Mothers can go and enjoy the show at 4:25pm. Dad’s and guests, the show starts at 4:30pm Sharp and lasts approximately 1 ½ hours. Don’t be late or you will miss out! We start on time! The Finale will be short, I like the girls to each have their time to shine on stage, by the time the oldest girls receive their awards most of the audience has left and the older girls feel bad. I will do the awards by class- please stay until the end. This will take only a few minutes.

FLOWERS_ if you want to give your daughter flowers at the Recital please don’t bring them to the stage. Give them to your daughter in person later as you are leaving. Each year there are girls that feel bad because they think I am the one who gave the other girls the flowers.

Hair–pull it up at sides to the top of the crown of the head in a hair elastic for both the Recital and the Dress Rehearsal. Hair needs to be curled and looking nice! Also for pictures have your hair done. Some girls have asked to wear pony tails or Buns, this is also fine. I just want it out of their eyes. Some of the classes have headbands this year please bobby pin them in place - fix your hair to look nice and out of their eyes.

Make-up– light makeup for the pictures, and darker makeup for the Recital so they don’t look washed out on stage.

Class Mothers–I need at least 2 mothers per class to help with each class. I will have a sign up sheet in the studio. You will need to be to both the Dress Rehearsal and the Recital. All you need to do is tell the Young Women helpers what costume needs to go on next and make sure they understand the dance lineup order, this is done between 3:45pm and 4:25pm Then you can go watch the Recital or watch from the side stage. Over the last years I have had Young Women helpers for the Recital, if you have someone who would like to help let me know. I like to have at least 2 –3 girls with each class. We will have a big room across from the stage and also the wide hall to line up in. Please look for your daughters color-this will be the same color as the cardstock note on her bag and have her costume pictures on it. Former students and sister usually love to help and they can bring friends too. Please no men or boys in the dressing area.

Pictures- Please have your daughter come dressed in her first costume, and bring her bag with her second costume in it. Your daughter will be in the group pictures regardless if you order or not. She will just not have individual pictures taken as the other girls. Please bring your picture money and envelop to the Dress Rehearsal. This will be the only time to pay. Please do not let your daughter miss their group pictures even if you are not ordering. I love to have the entire girl’s pictures up on the wall in the studio. They love to see their pictures also. You have one Picture packet in your Costume bag to know prices and you may pick another one up at the desk that day for the other costume picture order. Cory Adams studio has asked that no cameras be in the photo area- this is how they earn their money and it is not proper to take your own photos after they have set up backdrops and done so much work.

Pictures will need to be picked up at the Video Party the next week.

Recital Video Party– Wednesday May 13th, or Thursday May 14th. 4:00- 5:15pm you may come to either day. This is a highlight for the girls. They love this party and to see themselves and the other classes dance on video, it’s fun for them to see the benefit of all their hard work these last weeks.

PLEASE CARPOOL. Drive slow and watch for dancers.

Please be to your class each week unless you are sick- it is really hard to practice with a few girls missing every week. Many of the girls have missed so many classes since we started learning the dances that they still do not know the routines. It is also very confusing to the other girls to make changes with out her partner there each week. We only have 4 weeks to practice, please try to be on time and stay the whole class. YOUR CLASS NEEDS YOU.

Please call if you have any questions or concerns or don’t understand this note.

Your daughters are absolutely wonderful and talented, thanks for a great year and thanks to you mom’s and dads also for helping them to be able to develop their talents and gain confidence, grace and poise and have a lot of fun in learning to express themselves. Some of your daughters have helped this year with steps for their dances and it is great to see them dream, grow and share their talents. I hope to see each of them again next year.

After 30 years here in this home with wonderful neighbors and friends we have made a prayerful decision and 30 year dream to build our own home. We choose a place out of the city where our growing posterity can come and we can enjoy them all. The sale of this house will depend on the market and if we can get the price we need, if we have not had any good offers by the first of August our son and his wife will live here when we move in the Fall and there is a possibility Kristin and I will continue to come here and teach dance at least one day a week. So I will be taking sign ups for Fall Dance The Registration Fee will not be cashed but returned to you if this house sells this summer. If not I would love to continue to teach your daughters through next spring. This has been a very hard decision for us; we love our ward, good friends and neighbors for the last 32 years, And mostly after hearing conference this weekend we feel the peace that this change can be a blessing. You and your beautiful daughters have taught me so much and I feel grateful for all the support these 15 years of teaching dance, your friendship, love, and kindness. Your girls have truly been a blessing and have been a bit of heaven in my life each week.
I will be starting a dance studio in my home in Santaquin which is 30 minutes away on a day different than the day I teach here (if the house doesn’t sell), if you would like to sign up let me know which day Tuesday or Wednesday or if it doesn’t matter, I will go with what ever has the highest demand.
With love Kim I will keep you posted with emails through the summer.
